 | Reflecting on a life with U.S., Israeli leaders |
| Downtown Express United States April 9, 2003 An article about journalist and author Ruth Gruber and her latest book, Inside of Time: My Journey From Alaska to Israel:
An exodus of even more famous and direct application was reprised by Ruth, an on-shore witness of the landing at Haifa, Israel in her book Exodus 1947: The Ship that Launched a Nation - and, of course, by Leon Uris in the novel from which Otto Preminger made his all-star 1960 film.
She giggles as she relates how Uris, when the picture was shooting, had suggested to Preminger that he read her book too.
"The next day Preminger called Uris and said: 'If I'd read her book first, I'd never have bought yours.' Then 'Exodus' was to open in New York and the Israeli consul gave a big party. At the party I asked Preminger if it was true he'd said that to Uris. Preminger said: 'Yes, absolutely true - and you know what I'm going to do for you? Here's two free tickets to the opening.'"
