Lionel Rothschild was the first Jewish member of the British Parliament. Elected in 1847, Rothschild did not take office until 1858 when the House of Lords agreed to a change of the wording of the oath that was compulsory for all Members of Parliment. Rothschild had refused to swear to the oath which contained lines such as "on the true faith of a Christian."
