He died on July 5, 1983, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
By the age of nine, James joined his father playing trumpet in a travelling circus's band.
In 1937, James joined Benny Goodman's band. Less than two years later, James
formed his own band. For a short time, Frank Sinatra was the dinger for James's band.
In 1941, his hit song, "You Made Me Love You" sold over a million copies. In 1943,
James married actress Betty Grable.
James's band continued performing throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
In the 1960s, James's band played long engagements in Las Vegas, Nevada,
