William Cooper, father of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper, settled Cooperstown, New York, in the late eighteenth century.

Cooperstown surrounds Lake Otsego which, by the mid-1900s, became a summer retreat for the wealthy.

Cooperstown is home of the New York State Historical Association and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
