| David C. Holly was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1915. During World War II, Holly Dave served in the U.S. Navy and captained a warship in the Pacific.
During the Korean conflict, Holly served as an intelligence officer and was often deplyed behind enemy lines.
Before retiring from military service in 1964, acted as Naval Attaché for the U.S. Embassy in London, England.
After leaving the military, Holly attended American University and earned a Ph.D. He became an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy; Associate Professor of International Law and Relations at American University; and Professor and Chairman of the Government and Foreign Affairs Department at Hampden-Sydney College.
Holly also found the time to write about something he loved, steamboats. In addition to Exodus 1947, Holly wrote Steamboat on the Chesapeake: Emma Giles and the Tolchester Line, Tidewater by Steamboat and Chesapeake Steamboats: Vanished Fleets.
