GI - An enlisted person in any of the U.S. armed forces. The term is based on the abbreviation of "Galvanized Iron" as stamped on army supplies such as trash cans. Later the abbreviation was taken to mean "general issue" or "government issue" and applied to other military supplies and eventually to soldiers.
