| Rabbi Israel Meir Lau was born in 1937 in Pyotrekov, Poland. During the war, Lau was in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
Lau's parents were lost in the Holocaust. After liberation, Lau immigrated to Israel and lived with his uncle.
Lau studied religion and in 1971 he was ordained and served as rabbi in the Or Torah congregation in Tel Aviv.
In 1979, Lau was chosen as the Chief Rabbi of Netanya. In 1983, he became a member of the Rabbinical Council.
From 1988 to 1993, Lau served as Chief Rabbi and head of the Rabbinical Court of Tel Aviv - Jaffa.
