| William Millman was one of the crew members of the President Warfield/Exodus 1947 as she carried Jewish refugees to Palestine.
Millman served in the U.S. Navy. "I had my problems in the service because of the fact that I was Jewish. I caught a lot of garbage. But I took care of myself. And when I came out [of the Navy], I didn't like what I saw and what I read about [the treatment of the Jews by the Nazis]. I decided I would do something about it."
A friend recommended that he visit the Weston Trading Company in Boston, Massachusetts. Weston was a front for the Haganah which was actively procuring ships to carry Jewish refugees to Palestine.
Millman was sent to Baltimore, Maryland to join the crew of the President Warfield. Millman signed on as the ship's Helmsman and Bosun's Mate.
When British sailors boarded the Exodus 1947 off the Egyptian coast, Millman attemted to pull a British sailor out of the ship's Wheelhouse when the sailor pulled a gun and shot Millman in the face. Millman suffered a compound fracture of the jaw.
After the ship was surrended to the British, Millman was arrested and taken to a hospital in Haifa. A month later Millman was deported to the United States.
