Preminger directed a few films in Germany before coming to America. He directed two films for 20th Century-Fox, but clashed with studio chief Darryl Zanuck.
Preminger began acting in films - often playing Nazis even though he was Jewish - until he returned to directing in 1944 with the thriller Laura.
